We are forced by Microsoft to use the Appdata folder. I don't get it why Microsoft is supporting this unprofessional behaviour by using this method by themself.Įven worse: AFAIK it is not even possible to administratively deploy the OneDrive Next Gen Client to Program Files like some other software allows me to do optionally (e.g. (looking at you, Spotify/Dropbox/MeetingTools/etc) to enable users to circumvent the lack of administrative rights. Installing Software into the users APPDATA Profile directory is nothing else than a bad habit by some dumb software developers It has so many disadvantages, I don't even know where to start. I do not see any kind of advantage using the APPDATA approach. Taking a look at the Installation process of the Onedrive NG Sync Client, it installs itself into the User Profiles APPDATA Directory like any usual trojan/virus does, instead of the usual %PROGRAMFILES% Directory. Of software is administratively installed at c:\Program Files, and the user may execute binary files from there because of the whitelisting. For obvious security reasons (Crypto trojans) we have Software Restriction Policies in use, and whitelisted %PROGRAMFILES% on our clients. We are currently planning our deployment of the OneDrive Next Generation Sync client.
